Situation
Valposchiavo offers the most direct and natural north-south link between the Engadin and Valtellina. Situated on the southern side of the Alps, the altitude changes by about 3,500 m over just 25 km – one of the most extreme changes in altitude in the Alps. Piz Palü is the valley’s highest peak, lying at 3,905 m above sea level; the lowest point in the valley is at the confluence of the Poschiavino and Adda rivers, 414 m above sea level. From the Bernina Pass (2,328 m above sea level), two alpine valleys – Val Agoné and Val Pila – lead south to the plateaux of Cavaglia and of La Rösa respectively. They reunite in Poschiavo on the valley floor, which extends from Pedemonte all the way to Lake Poschiavo. At the southern end of the valley, the Motta di Miralago quarry marks the end of the lake and the start of Brusio.
This neighbouring municipality is characterised by a sharp increase in altitude up to Piattamala Pass, which also forms the valley’s political border with Italy. Valposchiavo can be reached from the north via the Bernina Pass, from the south via the Piattamala border crossing with Italy and from the east via Livigno Pass. The Rhaetian Railway passes through Valposchiavo and connects the Upper Engadin with Valtellina. Valposchiavo can also be reached via trails along a number of Alpine passes on the eastern and western slopes.
